UCG’s Care Leaver Covenant Commitment

UCG has formally pledged its commitment to the Care Leaver Covenant, demonstrating our commitment to supporting care experienced students throughout their education and helping them achieve positive futures.

What is the Care Leaver Covenant?

The Care Leaver Covenant is a national programme that brings together organisations across the UK to provide practical opportunities and support for care leavers. By signing the Covenant, UCG has committed to improving the educational experience of care experienced students and helping remove barriers to success.

We commit to:

  • Providing a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Offering dedicated Student Support.
  • Helping students access financial support.
  • Supporting progression into university, apprenticeships and employment.
  • Working with local authorities and partner agencies.
  • Listening to student feedback to continually improve our support.
  • Raising awareness of the needs of care experienced students across the college.

What support will I receive?

Once you have been identified as a care experienced student, you may be eligible for a range of additional support, including:

  • Academic support
  • Catch-up opportunities where appropriate
  • Wellbeing support
  • A dedicated Young Carers Champion within the Student Support Team
  • Free college gym membership to the Paddington Gym or weekly vouchers for Willesden Sports Centre.
  • One complimentary hair cut & blow dry per term at the Colleges Hair and Beauty Salon (subject to availability)
  • A monthly food parcel
  • Financial support

In addition to the support available at UCG, care experienced students can also access a wide range of national opportunities through the Care Leaver Covenant Connects platform. These include employment opportunities, training, discounts, wellbeing support and much more.

“The facilities here are brilliant. You have range of courses you can study. My teachers in the Performing Arts department have got history in the industry, which is very useful. You get to ask them for advice and actual knowledge from the industry, and take that into your own work within the college also afterwards. ”

“Studying here has been the best experience”
City of Westminster College Logo

“At City of Westminster College, my experience has been the best of all the other colleges I’ve attended. The reason I like CWC is because the teachers make my journey easier with assessment and exams. I’m a Level Two Science student and I enjoy my lessons because most of them are practical, which are helpful for me. I love studying at CWC because you meet people from other countries – all over the world and from all different communities.”

And if I come early for a class, I can use the Learning Resources Centre, I can use the computers, the books, just to continue all my studies outside the classroom time.”

“Getting into security has opened doors for me.”
City of Westminster College Logo

“The training process was seamless. I had good instructors who were very flexible, supporting people of all learning levels. On the last day after our exams, a security company came and did a presentation. We had the opportunity to have an interview afterwards. I told them about my experiences, and they said I would be a good fit. I formally applied for a role and started with the company soon after. Getting into security has opened doors for me. I hope I will continue to take steps up the career ladder.”
