Westminster City Council host Careers Cafe for English for Work Learners

City of Westminster College’s students this week attended a careers café hosted by Westminster City Council.

The event, at Westminster City Hall, was organised by the college’s Business Development team specifically for our English for Work Learners.

The students, for whom English is a second language, had the opportunity to explore career options, gain advice on interview preparation, and help with their CVs and introductory covering letters.

This was all done in a relaxed setting and provided an opportunity for the students to practice their language skills in a working style environment.

“Learners from our English for Work programme (ESP Provision) had the opportunity to explore career options and identify areas that need to be developed under employability skills which will lead them to occupy places of potential candidates when joining an employment and selection process.” – Davi Dawson S. Barbosa, Programme lead & Tutor – English for Work

“Our English for Work learners have great foreign skills, experiences, knowledge, and qualifications.  These learners are ready to explore the employment industry here in the United Kingdom, and events like this is essential in propelling them to that next level.” – Affi Bassey, Business Development Employer Engagement Manager

Comments from students:

“It was such a pleasure to meet all of you. The feedback about my CV and recommendations for behaviour on the job interview was very helpful.” – Dariia Samokha

“It was a useful format for meetings. We got a lot of information and ways to get a job in the UK and advice on what must include a CV, how we can present ourselves and our skills.” – Galyna Goncharova

“I would like to thank you for a very useful meeting at the Careers Cafe. The meeting was very important, I received extra support and new knowledge. I believe that with  such meetings many students will be able to successfully pass an interview and find a good job.” – Galyna Mykolaienko

“Studying here has been the best experience”
City of Westminster College Logo

“At City of Westminster College, my experience has been the best of all the other colleges I’ve attended. The reason I like CWC is because the teachers make my journey easier with assessment and exams. I’m a Level Two Science student and I enjoy my lessons because most of them are practical, which are helpful for me. I love studying at CWC because you meet people from other countries – all over the world and from all different communities.”

“Getting into security has opened doors for me.”
City of Westminster College Logo

“The training process was seamless. I had good instructors who were very flexible, supporting people of all learning levels. On the last day after our exams, a security company came and did a presentation. We had the opportunity to have an interview afterwards. I told them about my experiences, and they said I would be a good fit. I formally applied for a role and started with the company soon after. Getting into security has opened doors for me. I hope I will continue to take steps up the career ladder.”
