Student Playwrights Partner with Award-Winning Players

Performing arts students at City of Westminster College have had their original scripts performed by an award-winning theatre company.

Actors from the Papatango Theatre Company, who specialise in promoting new writers, performed the work live on stage as well as publishing the students’ work.

The young and aspiring writers will now have their work entered into the Young Playwright’s Award which showcases and promotes the UK’s best and brightest up and coming writing talent.

The three winning scripts will be selected at the end of the academic year by a panel of experienced and well-respected industry professionals.

One of the most established awards available for young script writers, the Young Playwright’s Award is supported by new writing publisher Nick Hern Books who support the actors, writers, and others who make it happen.

Students from City of Westminster College prepared their entries for the competition during a two-hour workshop organised by the company.

They were guided by former winner of the competition and professional playwright James Rushbrooke who led the seminar, which helped them put together their short monologues.

The monologues were then performed by the company’s professional actors, the recordings of which were later screened in a special screening at the launch of the book.

In addition to their work being performed and published, the lucky students were also able to take part in a Q&A to learn more about writing for stage and screen.

City of Westminster College, and the United Colleges Group, is extremely proud of its students and congratulates them on the hard work and dedication they have shown in putting these works together.

The college also wishes all its students who are entering the competition every possible success.

Stephen Davis, Group Principal of the United Colleges Group, said:

“The creativity of our student never ceases to impress and amaze me.

“It is clear that we have some innovative, bold, and highly intelligent writers among our performing arts students and this latest initiative is further proof of that.

“I would like to thank the players at the Papatango Theatre, as well as our own staff and students, for making this possible and wish all our entrants the best of luck in the upcoming competition.”

“Studying here has been the best experience”
City of Westminster College Logo

“At City of Westminster College, my experience has been the best of all the other colleges I’ve attended. The reason I like CWC is because the teachers make my journey easier with assessment and exams. I’m a Level Two Science student and I enjoy my lessons because most of them are practical, which are helpful for me. I love studying at CWC because you meet people from other countries – all over the world and from all different communities.”

“Getting into security has opened doors for me.”
City of Westminster College Logo

“The training process was seamless. I had good instructors who were very flexible, supporting people of all learning levels. On the last day after our exams, a security company came and did a presentation. We had the opportunity to have an interview afterwards. I told them about my experiences, and they said I would be a good fit. I formally applied for a role and started with the company soon after. Getting into security has opened doors for me. I hope I will continue to take steps up the career ladder.”
