Supported Learning
Supported Learning at the College of North West London is designed for students aged 16–24 with learning difficulties and disabilities. These personalised study programmes help learners develop independence, communication, and employability skills at a level that suits their individual needs. Courses are delivered across our Willesden and Maida Vale campuses, with students typically attending 3–4 days per week (16–18 hours). Each learner follows a tailored pathway, supported by experienced staff and specialist services.
Our Supported Learning provision offers a range of pathways, each focused on building confidence, life skills and progression opportunities.
1. Learning to Living (Pre-Entry Level)
A practical, full-time course for students with complex learning difficulties, focusing on independence and communication.
- Communication skills (including signs, symbols, arts and digital tools)
- Work skills through social enterprise and work experience
- Community and leisure activities
- Daily living skills such as cooking, money management and healthy living
2. Preparation for Adulthood (Pre-Entry – Entry Level 1)
Designed to build independence and prepare students for work and adult life.
- Daily living skills including travel training and budgeting
- Community engagement and leisure activities
- Employment skills through enterprise and external visits
- Communication development including Communication Café activities
3. Learning for Work (Entry Level 1)
Based at Maida Vale, this course supports students with moderate learning difficulties to prepare for employment.
- Enterprise projects and group work experience
- Development of personal, social and independence skills
- Support from a Supported Employment Coordinator
4. Skills for Work (Entry Level 2–3)
Aimed at students preparing for supported internships or employment.
- Work experience and CV preparation
- Mini jobs and enterprise projects
- Communication, literacy, numeracy and ICT skills
- Independent living skills such as travel and budgeting
5. Pre-Internship (Entry Level 2–3)
This course prepares students for supported internships or employment through practical experience and skill development.
- Work placements, volunteering and enterprise activities
- Employability and key workplace skills
- Enrichment and real-world learning opportunities
Across all pathways, English and maths are embedded, and learners may also receive support from speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists where required.
At every stage, learners are supported to progress to the next appropriate step.
Progression opportunities include:
- Further Supported Learning courses at a higher level
- Supported internships
- Sheltered, supported or open employment
- Adult education or day provision services
Students also work towards recognised ASDAN qualifications in areas such as Personal Progress, Preparation for Adulthood and Employability.
Assessment is continuous and personalised to each learner’s goals and abilities.
- Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) with clear targets
- Ongoing tutor feedback and progress reviews
- Portfolio-based evidence of skills and achievements
Parents and carers receive regular updates on progress and development.
These courses are for students aged 16–24 with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, often with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
As part of the application process:
- We will consult with parents/carers, teachers and support professionals
- You will be invited to visit the college
- You may attend an interview and taster session
