Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship
The Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship at the College of North West London is designed for learners who want to build a career in cooling, climate control and sustainable energy systems. This course prepares you to install, maintain and repair systems used in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technologies. These systems are essential across industries such as food production, retail, transport, healthcare, data centres and commercial buildings. You will develop the technical skills needed to work on modern cooling and heating systems, including energy-efficient and low-carbon technologies that support environmental sustainability.
This engineering apprenticeship combines hands-on training with technical learning to develop your skills in installation, maintenance and servicing of cooling and heating systems.
You will learn how to:
- Install, commission and maintain refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems
- Carry out routine servicing and reactive repairs on cooling and heating equipment
- Work with vapour compression systems used in industrial and commercial environments
- Diagnose faults and apply effective solutions to technical problems
- Understand system design, operation and performance across different applications
- Apply health and safety regulations and environmental standards, including F-Gas regulations
- Work with a range of tools, equipment and digital systems used in the industry
- Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues and other trades
You will also develop transferable skills such as problem-solving, time management, teamwork and working independently across multiple sites.
After completing this course, you can progress into roles such as:
- Refrigeration Technician
- Air Conditioning Engineer
- Heat Pump Engineer
- Service or Maintenance Engineer
- Commissioning Engineer
You may also progress into specialist areas within sustainable energy systems or further study in engineering. This apprenticeship supports professional recognition as an Engineering Technician (EngTech).
Assessment for this Level 3 apprenticeship includes an End-Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of the programme.
- A practical assessment with questions where you demonstrate installation and maintenance tasks
- A multiple-choice test with 50 questions to assess technical knowledge
- An interview supported by an apprenticeship development journal synopsis
You will also complete industry-recognised qualifications, including F-Gas certification and relevant Level 2 and Level 3 diplomas in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems.
The EPA is graded as fail, pass or distinction and confirms your competence in the role.
- 4–5 GCSEs (grades 4–5), including English (and maths if required) (flexibility may apply)
- OR Level 2 qualification
- An interview may be required; we’ll be in touch after you apply to invite you to an interview if needed
- Alternative entry via relevant experience may be acceptable
