GCSE Biology
GCSE Biology is a one-year, part-time programme designed for adult learners who want to gain a recognised science qualification for career progression, further education or teacher training. This intensive course combines theoretical biology knowledge with practical scientific investigation, helping you build a strong foundation for future study or employment in science and healthcare-related fields.
Awarding Body:
The course is structured into key units covering essential biology topics and scientific skills.
You will learn through classroom-based teaching, practical activities, homework and independent study, with opportunities to carry out scientific investigations.
- How Science Works (scientific methods and investigation)
- Biology 1, 2 and 3 core units
- Balanced diet and nutrition
- Defence against disease
- Nervous and endocrine systems
- Cardiovascular system
- Homeostasis
- Ecology and the environment
- Genetics, reproduction and evolution
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- Level 3 science qualifications such as BTEC Applied Science
- Access to HE courses in Science or Health
- University pathways in science, healthcare or education (with further qualifications)
A GCSE in Biology supports entry into careers such as teaching, healthcare and science-based roles.
Assessment is carried out through a combination of coursework and exams:
- Controlled assessment (25%) including practical investigation
- Three written exam papers (75%) covering Biology 1, 2 and 3
You will need to have previously gained a grade 4 or a grade C in GCSE English and/or Maths, we may also require additional GCSEs, depending on your English and Maths grades. Or you will need to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills by taking an initial assessment.
