Construction and the Built Environment Level 1/ 2 First Extended Certificate
Construction and the Built Environment Level 1/2 First Extended Certificate is a one-year course for learners aged 16–18 who are interested in careers such as civil engineering, construction management or architecture. This course is ideal if you have not yet achieved the grades required for a T Level and want to build the skills and knowledge needed to progress to Level 3 study, apprenticeships or employment in the construction sector.
Awarding Body:
You will study a mix of core and specialist units that introduce you to key areas of construction and the built environment.
You will learn through classroom teaching, practical activities, project work and independent study to develop both technical and employability skills.

- Science and mathematics for construction
- Sustainability in the built environment
- Technical drawing
- Tendering and estimating
- Surveying and civil engineering
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- T Levels in Construction or related subjects
- Level 3 vocational courses in construction and engineering
- Construction apprenticeships
Assessment is a combination of exams and coursework:
- Two external exams (construction technology and sustainability)
- Coursework assignments for other units
- Internally assessed and externally moderated work
Grades range from Level 2 Pass (PP) to Distinction* (D*D*), with the possibility of achieving a Level 1 Pass if Level 2 criteria are not met.
- 2–4 GCSEs (grades 2, 3 or 4) including minimum grade 3 in English and grade 4 in Mathematics
- Initial assessment in English and Maths
- Alternative entry via reference, personal statement, or demonstrated interest may be acceptable
- Gain practical and theoretical knowledge of construction
- Prepare for T Levels or Level 3 study
- Develop skills for careers in engineering, architecture and construction
- Build confidence through project-based learning
