Bricklaying Level 1
Start your career in construction with our Bricklaying Level 1 course at the College of North West London. This beginner-friendly course is designed to introduce you to the essential skills needed to work in the bricklaying and construction industry. You don’t need any previous experience, just motivation, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. You’ll gain hands-on experience in a professional workshop environment while developing key employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
Awarding Body:
This practical bricklaying course focuses on building your core skills through workshop-based learning. You will learn how to safely use tools and complete a variety of brickwork tasks.
Topics include:
- Setting out using levels and string lines
- Building foundations
- Constructing cavity walls
- Creating
different types of brickwork, including:
- Garden walls
- Structural walls
- Developing accuracy in laying bricks in lines and rows
- Progressing to
more advanced work such as:
- Corners
- Piers
You’ll learn in a combination of hands-on practical sessions and classroom-based theory to support your understanding of construction techniques.
After completing this Level 1 bricklaying course, you can progress onto:
Bricklaying Level 2 Diploma
Other construction-related

Apprenticeships in bricklaying or construction trades
This course provides a strong foundation for entering the construction industry or further developing your technical skills.
Assessment is continuous throughout the course and is based on:
- Practical workshop tasks
- Observation of your skills and technique
- Completion of assigned projects
- Demonstration of knowledge through classroom activities
Your progress will be regularly reviewed by your tutors to ensure you are developing industry-standard skills.
- No formal qualifications required OR 0–2 GCSEs (grades 1, 2 or 3) (flexibility may apply)
- Initial assessment in English and maths
- Alternative entry via reference, personal statement, or demonstrated interest may be acceptable
