Art & Design Level 2 Diploma
The UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design at City of Westminster College is a one-year course for students aged 16–18 who want to develop their creativity and explore a wide range of art and design disciplines. Based at our Paddington Green Campus, this course is ideal if you want to build a strong portfolio, gain practical skills and discover which areas of the creative industries inspire you most.
Awarding Body:
This course introduces you to a wide range of creative techniques and specialisms through exciting, project-based learning.
You will develop skills in:
- Drawing, painting and observational techniques
- Sculpture and 3D design
- Printmaking and screen printing
- Photography and digital media
- Animation and visual communication
You will also explore specialist areas such as architecture, graphics, interiors, fine art and design.
Projects include:
- Collaborative work with Performing Arts students, designing sets and costumes
- Creative projects based on personal identity and social themes
- A Final Major Project where you specialise in your chosen area
You will use research to develop ideas, respond to creative briefs and present your work professionally.
Learning extends beyond the classroom with visits to leading London galleries such as Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the V&A, The Barbican and the National Theatre, as well as workshops with practising artists.
After successfully completing this course, most students progress to Level 3 Art & Design courses to further develop their skills and prepare for university or creative careers.

- UAL Level 3 Applied General Diploma in Art & Design
- UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Practice
This course can lead to future careers in creative arts, design, media and related industries.
Assessment is continuous and based on practical project work.
You will complete 8 units and be assessed on your ability to:
- Research and develop ideas
- Use materials, processes and practical skills
- Plan and produce creative work
- Evaluate and reflect on your progress
- 2–4 GCSEs (grades 2, 3 or 4) OR Level 1 qualification (flexibility may apply)
- Ideally English or maths at grade 3–4, or willingness to study alongside
- An interview will be required; we’ll be in touch after you apply to invite you to an interview if needed
- Examples of your creative work
- Alternative entry via relevant experience may be acceptable
Whether your goal is to build a strong creative portfolio or to prepare for further study, this course will give you the foundation and confidence you need to take your next steps in the art and design world. The majority of students who complete this course progress onto our Level 3 Art & Design course, where they can continue to refine their skills and prepare for university or creative careers.
