Art & Design Level 1 Diploma
The UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art & Design at City of Westminster College is a one-year course designed for students aged 16–18 who want to explore their creativity and develop essential art and design skills. Based at our Paddington Green Campus, this course introduces you to a wide range of 2D and 3D and time-based art and design art forms. You will build confidence, creativity and practical skills while preparing for further study in the creative industries.
Awarding Body:
In this course you will explore visual language and build your creative skills toolkit through a variety of practical projects based on selected themes. You will explore both traditional and digital techniques, using visual research as the foundation for your work.
You will study:
- Drawing and observational skills
- 2D design including, drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, textiles and digital design
- 3D design and making techniques including sculpture and 3D art
- Time-based design including GIF animation and narrative techniques.
- Photography and darkroom techniques
- Creative research and idea generation
You will also take part in regular visits to museums and galleries to inspire your work and gain insight into the creative industries.
Alongside your main course, you will develop your communication skills and may study Functional Skills in English if required.
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to a Level 2 Art & Design course to further develop your skills.
This can lead to:
- Level 3 creative courses
- University study in art, design or media
- Careers in creative industries such as art, design and media
Assessment is continuous and based on your practical and coursework projects.
- Successful completion of 7 mandatory units
- Creative project work and portfolios
- Coursework and written assignments
- Presentations of your work
Projects typically run over half a term, and you will be expected to complete 4-6 hours of independent study each week.
- No formal qualifications required OR 0–2 GCSEs (grades 1, 2 or 3) (flexibility may apply)
- Initial assessment in English and maths
- Alternative entry via reference, personal statement, or demonstrated interest may be acceptable
