Applied Science Level 3 Extended Diploma
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a full-time course for learners aged 16-18 who want to pursue a career in science, healthcare or medical-related fields. This qualification offers an alternative to A Levels, combining practical laboratory experience with academic study. The course includes a Medical Science pathway, ideal for students interested in careers such as radiography, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy and biomedical science.
Awarding Body:
You will study a wide range of scientific topics, developing both theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory skills.
You will learn through lectures, practical experiments, group work and independent study, supported by guest speakers and visits to scientific organisations and industry settings.
- Biology, chemistry and physics principles
- Medical science and healthcare applications
- Laboratory techniques and scientific investigations
- Data analysis and scientific reporting
- Real-world applications of science in industry
The course is delivered over two years:
- Year 1: Subsidiary Diploma
- Year 2: Diploma / Extended Diploma
You will also continue to develop your English and Maths skills through GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications where required.
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- University degrees in Applied Science, Biomedical Science, Nursing, Radiography, Physiotherapy or related subjects
- Higher education and professional training in healthcare and science fields
- Science-related career pathways
Many students progress to degrees in areas such as chemistry, biochemistry, optometry, medical technology and dental hygiene.
Assessment is coursework-based and completed throughout the course:
- Written assignments and laboratory reports
- Practical assessments and observations
- Presentations and project work
Each unit is assessed through one or more of these methods, allowing you to build a comprehensive portfolio of evidence.
- 4–5 GCSEs (grades 4–5), including English (and maths if required) (flexibility may apply)
- OR Level 2 qualification
- An interview may be required; we’ll be in touch after you apply to invite you to an interview if needed
- Alternative entry via relevant experience may be acceptable
