Applied Science Level 1 Diploma
Level 1 Diploma in Applied Science is a full-time course designed for learners aged 16–18 who are interested in starting a career in science or science-related industries. This course provides a strong introduction to scientific concepts, practical laboratory skills and the world of science, helping you build confidence and prepare for further study.
Awarding Body:
The course consists of 11 units studied throughout the year, allowing you to develop your knowledge and skills step by step.
You will learn through a combination of classroom-based teaching, practical experiments, group work and independent study to build both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience.

You will also work towards improving your English and Maths skills through GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications where required.
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- Level 2 Applied Science
- Other Level 2 courses such as Engineering, Health and Social Care or Sport
- Further vocational study in science-related areas
Progression depends on achieving high-quality coursework and demonstrating readiness for Level 2 study.
Assessment is coursework-based and completed throughout the year:
- Written assignments
- Presentations
- Practical assessments and observations
- Laboratory reports
Each unit is assessed using one or more of these methods to build your portfolio of evidence.
- No formal qualifications required OR 0–2 GCSEs (grades 1, 2 or 3) (flexibility may apply)
- Initial assessment in English and maths
- Alternative entry via reference, personal statement, or demonstrated interest may be acceptable
