AM2 Assessment
The AM2 Assessment is the industry-standard assessment of occupational competence for electricians and is recognised across the UK electrical industry.
Designed for learners who have completed the required electrical training and workplace experience, the AM2 gives you the opportunity to demonstrate that you have the practical skills, technical knowledge and safe working practices required of a qualified electrician.
This is an assessment programme rather than a taught course. It is completed in a practical environment using industry-standard equipment and tasks that reflect the work electricians carry out in the workplace.
During the AM2 Assessment, you will be required to demonstrate your existing electrical knowledge and practical competence across a range of areas, including:
- Electrical installation skills
- Electrical science and technical knowledge
- Fault finding and diagnosis
- Inspection and testing
- Safe isolation and safe working practices
- Application of relevant industry standards and procedures
- Practical problem-solving
Successfully completing the AM2 Assessment can support progression towards:
- ECS Gold Card eligibility, subject to meeting all relevant requirements
- Qualified Electrician status
- Employment and career progression within the electrical industry
- Further specialist electrical qualifications and training
The AM2 is an industry-standard practical assessment completed over approximately one week.
You will complete a series of practical tasks designed to assess your ability to work safely and competently to recognised industry standards. These include installation work, inspection and testing, fault finding and the application of your electrical knowledge in practical situations.

Before undertaking the assessment, applicants must:
