Access to HE Diploma – Medicine
Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) is a Level 3 qualification designed for adult learners who want to progress to medical, dental or healthcare degrees but do not have traditional qualifications. This intensive course provides the scientific knowledge, academic skills and professional preparation needed to apply for competitive university programmes such as Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences.
Awarding Body:
You will complete a total of 60 credits, combining academic science subjects with essential study skills.
You will learn through classroom-based teaching, practical activities, independent study and tutorial support to prepare you for higher education.
- Biology / Human Biology – 15 graded credits
- Chemistry – 21 graded credits
- Physics and Maths – 9 graded credits
- Study Skills – 15 ungraded credits, including professional behaviours for medical practitioners
You will also develop key academic skills such as report writing, data analysis, exam preparation and critical reading, alongside guidance for university applications.
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- University degrees in Medicine or Dentistry (subject to entry requirements)
- Related degrees such as Biomedical Science, Medical Biochemistry, Neuroscience or Pharmacology
- Healthcare professions including Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Pharmacy
You are encouraged to gain relevant work experience in healthcare settings to strengthen your university application.
Assessment is carried out through a combination of:
- Coursework assignments
- Written exams
- Practical and academic tasks
This ensures you develop both subject knowledge and the academic skills required for higher education.
- 4–5 GCSEs (grades 4–5), including English (and maths if required) (flexibility may apply)
- OR Level 2 qualification
- An interview may be required; we’ll be in touch after you apply to invite you to an interview if needed
- Alternative entry via relevant experience may be acceptable

Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) – OCN London Region (OCNLR)
- Typically 2–3 days per week attendance required
- Personal tutor support throughout the course
- Independent study required alongside taught sessions
- Work experience in healthcare settings is strongly recommended
