A Level Media Studies
A Level Media Studies is designed for learners aged 16-18 who are interested in exploring the world of media, communication and creative industries. You will develop an understanding of how media shapes society, culture and opinions, while building valuable skills in analysis, creativity and critical thinking.
Awarding Body:
You will study key media concepts and apply them to a range of media forms, including print, moving image and digital platforms.
You will learn through classroom-based lessons, practical workshops, group discussions and independent research, combining theory with creative production work.
- Key media concepts: representation, audience, ideology, genre and narrative
- Analysis of media texts including film, print and online content
- Understanding how different groups and issues are represented in the media
- Media institutions and how the industry operates
- Practical coursework in media production (print or moving image)
After successfully completing this course, you can progress to:
- University degrees in Media, Communications, Journalism or related subjects
- Higher education or creative industry training
- Careers in media, film, television, marketing, advertising and digital content creation
Assessment is carried out through a combination of external exams and coursework:
- Two written exams (each worth 30%)
- Comparative analysis of unseen media texts
- Extended essays on representation, audience and media institutions
- Practical coursework (40%) involving two media production pieces
- 5 GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English and Mathematics (some subjects may have additional subject-specific requirements)
- An interview may be required; we'll contact you after you apply if this is necessary
- Previous A Level students and re-sit applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis
